For patients
Insurance and coverage
Coverage, referrals and benefits depend on your individual plan, so the best step is to verify before your visit. Here is how it works and how to check.
Accepted plans
Insurance we accept
We accept many major medical plans for dermatology visits. Because participation and plan networks change, we confirm your specific plan when you call to schedule rather than publishing a list that may be out of date.
Call the medical office at 804.270.6100 with your insurance card and we will check your coverage before your visit.
Before your visit
- 1
Call us with your insurance card in hand so we can confirm we are in your plan's network
- 2
Ask your plan whether a referral or prior authorization is needed to see a dermatologist
- 3
Check your deductible and specialist copay, so there are no surprises at check-out
- 4
If your coverage changes, tell us before your next visit
Frequently asked questions
Is my visit covered?
Medical dermatology visits, skin exams, biopsies and treatment of diagnosed skin conditions are generally covered as medical care. What you pay depends on your plan's deductible, copay, coinsurance and network. Cosmetic treatments at Medi Spa West are not covered by insurance.
Do I need a referral?
Many PPO plans let you see a dermatologist directly. HMO, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid plans often require a referral from your primary care doctor, and some procedures need prior authorization. Your plan's member services line can tell you; we are happy to help you check.
What if you are not in my network?
We will tell you before your visit. You can choose to be seen as a self-pay patient, and we can give you an estimate of the visit cost in advance.
What does self-pay mean?
Patients without insurance, or with a plan we do not accept, pay for the visit at the time of service. Call 804.270.6100 for current self-pay pricing.
Is a skin cancer screening preventive care?
Plans differ. Some treat a full-body skin exam as a specialist office visit with a copay, and a biopsy or removal is billed as a procedure. Ask your plan how it handles dermatology exams.
