Acne

Breakouts at any age, from blackheads and whiteheads to deep, painful cysts, and the marks they can leave behind.

What you may notice

Acne is the most common condition we see, and it is not only a teenage problem. Adults, and adult women in particular, often develop breakouts along the jawline and chin. Over-the-counter products help some people, but persistent, painful or scarring acne usually needs prescription care.

The sooner inflamed acne is controlled, the less likely it is to leave dark marks or permanent scars. That matters for every skin tone, and especially for skin that tends to darken after inflammation.

How we evaluate it

  • The type of acne you have (comedonal, inflammatory or cystic) and where it appears
  • Your history: when it started, what you have tried, hormonal patterns, medications and skin care
  • Any dark marks or scarring already present
  • Whether another condition, such as rosacea or folliculitis, is mimicking acne

Possible care approaches

  • Prescription topical treatments, including retinoids and antimicrobials
  • Oral medications for inflammatory or hormonal acne when appropriate
  • Guidance on cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens that will not clog pores
  • Once breakouts are controlled, in-office care through Medi Spa West for lingering marks and texture, such as peels and medical microdermabrasion

What to expect

  • Most acne treatments take six to twelve weeks to show their full effect, so we schedule a follow-up to adjust the plan
  • Some treatments cause dryness or irritation at first; we will tell you how to manage it
  • Clear skin is maintained rather than cured, so a simple ongoing routine is part of the plan

When to call

  • Breakouts that are painful, deep or leaving scars
  • Acne that has not improved after two to three months of over-the-counter care
  • Dark spots that linger after breakouts clear
  • New acne in adulthood, which can signal a hormonal change worth checking
