Your first visit

What to expect

  1. 1

    Call to schedule

Tell us what you'd like seen. Have your insurance card handy so we can confirm coverage before you come in.

  2. 2

    Arrive a little early

Plan on about 15 minutes for new-patient paperwork. Bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of medications and allergies.

  3. 3

    Your exam

We listen first, then examine the areas of concern (or your whole skin for a skin check) and explain what we see.

  4. 4

    A plan you can follow

You leave with a clear plan, prescriptions sent to your pharmacy, and a follow-up if one is needed.

More detail, including forms and what to bring, is on the For Patients page.

Medical or cosmetic?

Two kinds of care, one practice

Medical dermatology
Diagnosed conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and skin cancer. Usually covered by health insurance. Seen in the medical office.
Medi Spa West
Appearance-driven treatments such as neuromodulators, fillers, laser hair removal and peels. Paid out of pocket. Scheduled directly with the spa at 804.270.3032.
When they overlap
Acne scars, melasma and lingering redness from rosacea often have a medical and a cosmetic side. Because both live under one roof, your plan can cover the whole picture.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?

Many plans let you see a dermatologist directly, but some HMO and Medicaid plans require a referral from your primary care doctor. Check your plan or read our insurance guidance.

Is a medical dermatology visit covered by insurance?

Visits for diagnosed skin conditions, skin exams and biopsies are generally covered as medical care, subject to your plan's deductible, copay and network. Cosmetic treatments at Medi Spa Westare paid out of pocket.

Can I be seen by telehealth?

Yes. Virtual visits are available for many concerns. Call 804.270.6100 and ask for a Virtual Visit.

Do you see children?

Yes, we care for patients of all ages, from childhood eczema and acne to skin exams for older adults.
